John Cleese under fire for 'London not English' comment

The Fawlty Towers and Monty Python star has been criticised by Twitter users including Mayor of London Sadiq Khan.

John Cleese has come under fire after posting a message on Twitter suggesting that London is "not really an English city".

The Fawlty Towers and Monty Python star faced a backlash from hundreds of people on the social media site after making the comment on Wednesday.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, Tottenham MP David Lammy and author Caitlin Moran are among those who have criticised the 79-year-old.

In the post to his 5.6 million followers, Cleese, who voted for Brexit, said that friends had confirmed his previous opinion that London was no longer English, and noted the city's strong pro-Remain stance in the referendum.

"Some years ago I opined that London was not really an English city any more," he tweeted.

"Since then, virtually all my friends from abroad have confirmed my observation. So there must be some truth in it...

"I note also that London was the UK city that voted most strongly to remain in the EU."
